Kobo is a Canadian company that manufactures various eReaders and eReading apps. Their initial eReaders were sold exclusively through Borders prior to the book-seller’s demise. As a part of expanding their operations, Kobo is now offering Kobo Writing Life as its self-publishing arm, specifically for ebooks (not print books). Their website states there is no fee to sign up, and they offer conversion services to transfer your book file into their format (ePub). This service, Writing Life, just went live a couple of days ago. I used it for my books and was really happy with the simplicity and user-friendliness of the site, perhaps the easiest place to upload everything. The only bad part was the Preview mode never worked; it would simply attempt to load my books forever and not stop. Unfortunately, I went ahead and published my books without a real preview of what they will look like on the Kobo reader. Oh well, the good news is my formatting works well at all other places so I feel confident. Also I’ll send a note to customer support there and see if that helps.

This is by far the easiest of all the direct publishing interfaces to use. I’ve published over a dozen books with them and no hitch. Always use an epubchecked epub file, so I already know what they will do. The treat is being able to publish to 128 English-speaking countries in minutes. Sales started right off the bat, and while slow, they are something. Would like more data on how to improve these. Their near-instant reports system is a hoot. Much better than Amazon.
