I have published four books with Authorhouse and I have had different experiences each time BUT the books always came out great. Their costs are competitive with other self publishers. They seem to have a very large turnover in people and they have grown the organization by buying other publishing houses.Having a link to their book store is a help for book sales. I have paid for their marketing programs twice and I cannot say that there have been any results in terms of book sales.

The best thing I can say about AuthorHouse is that they were the reason I decided to find another way to self-publish. This was back in 2005, and I spent a small fortune on all their up-selling, which included editing ($1500 for a basic edit), over-priced book marketing tools, advertising that didn’t work and more. Their cover design was really awful back then as well, and if I wanted a simple change made to their cover design it took three months as it went back to the end of the queue, even just to switch a title font. Perhaps things have changed in seven years, but my experience was extremely frustrating as were many others who I found in forums.
However, they did produce a quality book that looked and felt nice in my hands, but getting there was not worth the time or money.
I’d recommend CreateSpace and either the free, do-it-yourself format, or one of their low cost help-supported options.

I published my book with Xlibris. I purchased a mid-level package and took advantage of a 40% discount. The cost was great compared to others and the service outstanding. They never went forward without getting my okay. I was pleased with the interior and the cover. I did use my own editor since I don’t like to risk an unknown service or person for this crucial job. I purchased the cover upgrade at a nominal and worthwhile cost, but no marketing or other services. I am totally pleased with the final product and I’m using them for the next two books of the trilogy since I took advantage of their recent 2 for 1 package sale.

I published my book with Author House. I turned them down twice before they offered me 1/2 off the best children’s package they had. The full content edit wasn’t to bad either. From the time I signed with Author House and had the printed book in my hands was 3 months and the book looked great. The only thing I didn’t like was I had to proof the book from a pdf and misjudged the size of the font and book from that. As a result I chose to not have them redo the font because they wanted more money for that. As for the marketing package I purchased, not too sure about that yet. My marketing campaign is starting up next month. The only problem I have run into with this, is getting my marketing/book signing kit. I faxed everything into them but they lost the fax and then forgot about me. I contacted the person a few weeks after I should have received my kit to see what was taken so long? I was told they lost the signed forms that were faxed. I sure could have used the marketing kit last week.
